In Charlotte, NC, Release: February 15, 2022 - Metrolina Builders, Inc (MBI), an award-winning Charlotte-based, commercial general contracting firm, announced its 50th anniversary.

MBI, a third-generation family business, opened its doors in 1972 when current board chairman John Williams founded Metrolina Builders with his father, A.L. Williams (deceased). In 2014, Matt Williams was appointed MBI President after interning with the company since the 1990’s and graduating from NC State.

Metrolina Builders, also a licensed Engineering firm, provides commercial design-build and general contractor services to developers, businesses and entrepreneurs focusing on Design-Build private sector projects in the office, medical, retail, industrial and multifamily markets.

Since its inception more than 50 years ago, the company has built more than 5,000,000 square feet of commercial space for it’s 1,000 plus clients in the southeast.

After 50 years in business, the executive team has seen ebbs and flows in the market, and has been successful at navigating not only economic shifts, but also in leading the market with innovative approaches, like Design Build. MBI President Matt Williams says “Our mission is helping others realize their vision. We do so by engaging with our relationship focused clients at the earliest stages of a project and assembling a talented team of professionals to fully evaluate all options for what, where and how to build in order to realize our clients’ vision.”

“We always knew we could be successful as a traditional general contractor, stepping in just as the builder after someone else had coordinated and performed all the design work,” says Williams. “But our passion and unlocking the true value we could provide was through Design-Build and assembling all of the necessary players together for input before committing to a full design.

Metrolina Builders always maintained a mix of Design-Build projects and those where they served as a traditional general contractor. However, in the early 2000’s, their number of Design-Build projects exceeded the traditional bid projects.

Today over 80% of MBI’s work is Design-Build. The current market conditions with prices escalating daily and supply chain disruptions are forcing people to take non-traditional approaches to procuring materials early to meet construction deadlines, and Metrolina Builders’ Design-Build program and experience has been the key to being able to meet and overcome these challenges, now more than ever.
